About Me

Valerie OttHi! I’m Val. Thanks so much for visiting my labor of love.

I am a wife, a mother to two awesome girls, an avid reader, a former librarian, a writer, a Buckeye fan, a baker, and a hopeless DIY addict.

Home Made Modern began as an outlet: a way for me to retain a sense of myself, my sense of style, and my personality through the very tasks inherent to being a stay-at-home mom. I love to read and write, so blogging about my home-making adventures seemed like it would suit me just fine. I must admit, though, I once saw a T-shirt that read, “No one cares about your blog” and thought it was the most hilarious thing I’d ever seen. I couldn’t imagine why someoone would want to share the details of their day to a nameless, faceless online community. But then I began reading some of them, and I was hooked. So…once the dust settled after our first child was born and we no longer had that deer-in-headlights look so common to new parents, I discovered that my once-observed life was a thing of the past, and that while our daughter couldn’t have cared less what the house looked like or what I made for dinner, I cared. And cared a lot. So I decided to write about our little life full of simple pleasures and found that it gave me purpose and lent structure and a sense of accomplishment to my days (something I really missed).

Along the way, I learned that the little things in life matter to me, the everyday can be special, and that I very much want to pass this love of home on to our two daughters. I want them to know simple pleasures and be comforted by them. The world is hectic and moves at a frenzied pace. The things that make a home, however, can be their touchstone. A homecooked meal, a clean house, arranging fresh flowers, the smell of something baking…these are all things that I grew up with and want to pass on to them.

Now that the girls are a tad older, Home Made Modern has become a passion of mine and the girls are my sidekicks. While some of the project and recipe ideas don’t spring from my own imagination (those I call Copycat Crafts), they are all executed with intention and flavored with my own sense of style. I hope that all of the projects and recipes I share are as successful for you as they were for me, at least as creations of joy in an ordinary day.

I hope you enjoy looking around. Thanks again for visiting!
