Happy Tuesday, everyone! First off, I’m so excited to share my latest project with you because along the way, I had my doubts about how it would look, but it turned out better than I imagined. So here it is:
I’ve never painted fabric before but had always wanted to try it. This pillow cost only $5.29 because I used fabric remnants and an old sweater headed for Goodwill. For the full tutorial on how to stencil a pillow, please check out my About.com article.
Secondly, do you happen to remember my post on decorating with navy and pink? Here’s what our guest room looked like exactly a year ago.
Well, now that this room is partially an office due to us building a desk into a rarely-used closet, I wanted to reduce the feminine elements and punch it up with some orange, which incidentally, is quickly becoming one of my favorite accent colors. Here’s a reminder of how the desk turned out…as you can see, I’m headed for a blue and orange color story.
And here’s a wider shot of what the bed looks like now with the addition of my beloved new orange pillow.
Other than the pillow, I only made a couple more changes. I spray painted the floral plates on the wall plain white to add a more modern touch, and I also added a chambray-colored throw and another pillow made from a man’s shirt. So which do you like better?
A couple of sidenotes: 1) As for the throw, it used to be cream. I attempted to dye it turquoise, and it turned out mint green. Project fail. I tried again with denim blue and this was the result. I wasn’t happy with the second choice at first, either, but then I tried it in this room and loved it! I’m so glad I didn’t give up. 2) I once read that different shades of the same color make for a more sophisticated palette, and I think in this room, that has helped me. I had previously been trying to match the navy on the wall, and that wasn’t working. When I tried this chambray blue, however, things started to pull together. Hmmm…interesting. This is a tip I’m gonna keep in mind moving forward.
