Sooooo…remember where we left off? We had removed one half of our kitchen wall…

…and decided to take this one out, too.

The idea was to achieve something like this:

And by golly, I think we have a similar footprint now!

I’m so happy with the open-ness, and the light. I don’t miss the cabinets we removed because I’m utilizing an old IKEA hutch that had been on the other side of our stove wall in the dining room (which you can see in the above pic). For now, the mess is contained and we are still totally functional. I’m sure it will be another story when we remove the rest of the soffit and many more cabinets in favor of the open shelving I’m coveting.
Our next step, though, is to pick the flooring. Until we save up for that and install it, I’m having fun making storyboards for our kitchen. Here’s my latest:

In case you’re wondering…I make my storyboards with good ol’ fashioned Word. I shared a tutorial for this awhile back, and I have to say, even after trying some fancier software to make customized mood boards, I still really like my old way. Maybe I’m just a curmudgeon.
So that’s where we stand. Thoughts? Suggestions? I know there are a lot of you out there who have undertaken kitchen renos and survived to blog the tales, so if you’ve got any war stories or wisdom to impart, don’t hold back!

very ambitious! it will look so good.
We did that with our kitchen 20 years ago and I've loved every minute of it. The dining room has now become the focal point of all get togethers because it's right near the kitchen and not isolated. You will love it. Would love to have you link this up to What to do Weekends (although it clearly is more than a weekend project. 🙂 following also. linda
